Thinking back, there are some things of the past month that stick on my mind, and maybe they are trying to tell me that I shouldn’t forget them.
Lessons are not always serious, are they? So are mine…
1. If you DO have to break a bone in your foot, try to do it in dry season. Skidding on slippery crutches (or slippery floor to be more accurate) is not as fun as it looks when we are not the ones watching from the other side of the TV at the slapstick comedies. Rainy season is the worst time to pass your time peacefully on crutches (in Indonesia), believe me…
2. One person on crutches and one with a dengue fever is not the best combination of all. In any case, two sick people in one is really asking for trouble.
3. You never really ask whether a place is friendly to the diffables until you temporarily (thank goodness…) become one of them. Well, this is not exactly lesson from September, August might be a better time setting for the revelation.
4. A statement from a gentleman I met on Sept 27, 2007. “I am moving on. It still hurts to remember those days. But I am an older guy now, I’m trying to move on and put all those things behind as fast as I could, and I don’t hold grudge like younger people.” A brave statement from a father of six who shed tears remembering how terrified he was when three guns were pointed to his back as he was forced to march down to rice-fields ditches.
Weekend of Oct 6-7, 2007 - five days countdown to a long trip, but I still have to train my foot to be able to go at least with one crutch…..
